Competition wins as gifts?
January 20, 2009 by admin
Let’s be realistic, we don’t really want to keep every prize that we win.
Take for instance you enter a competition with a family holiday as first prize, and camera as a runners up prize. When the competition is drawn, you are lucky enough to win a runner’s up prize, a new camera. Of course this is a wonderful prize win, but you’ve recently purchased (or won hopefully) the camera of your dreams and you really don’t have any use for this one.
In this situation you’re faced with a few solutions. You can give the camera away to charity or something similar, sell it to try and recover some of your comping costs (and we all know this hobby can have some expenses associated), keep it just for the hell of it, or give the lovely prize away as a gift.
Personally I have given away hundreds of dollars in prizes as gifts. Other prizes I have sold to friends and family at greatly reduced prices, and other times I have given things away. One of the sad things is when you get excited about having the chance to give a great gift to a family member or friend and the reception is less than welcome.
Hopefully not everyone out there has experienced this. But the truth is that when people realise you enter competitions as a hobby, very seldom do they realise the dedication and sometimes the expense that goes along with it. When this is the case, people often “expect” to recieve gifts, or don’t see the value in the gift when it is given.
Most people are grateful for receiving any sort of gift whether it be won or bought, but several times I have given prizes as gifts, keeping in mind that most times the gift is something I would never have been able to afford had I not won it, only to hear the comment “oh did you win this?”.
It can be hurtful to feel as though people don’t appreciate what you are sharing with them. But the reality is, that unless people comp full time as I often do, then they won’t understand the dedication and expense. There are now some family and friends I don’t give prizes to as gifts. Instead I greet them with a $20 gift card instead. It’s their loss, they may have received prizes worth hundreds of dollars otherwise, but there is a point that you need to remember that this is your hobby, your fun and it should stay that way!
Competitions & The Economic Downturn
January 19, 2009 by admin
There are many opinions being thrown around at the moment as to whether the worldwide economic downturn will affect competitions. I was asked if I think there will be more or less competitions due to the economic crisis worldwide?
It may seem crazy that to some, this would even BE a consideration, but like all keen hobbiests, compers are passionate about what they do!!
So will the economic downturn see a change in the competition, contests and sweepstakes market?
Well, who can be sure, but here are my predictions for the coming year…..
- More competitions!! - It has been said that perhaps companies won’t be able to afford to run competitions if their bottom line profits become tight. BUT, my background in marketing tells me that cutting back on competitions won’t be the case for most companies.
You see, when money is tight in the economy, companies of all sizes are trying to find ways to stand out amongst their competitors. Many will resort to trying competitions and sweepstakes, and some will try this as a promotional method for the first time. Of course, we all know that competitions can be a huge flop and end up costing companies money for little return, but those who are smart and switched on with what consumers want will find themselves in a very successful position by attracting new and old customers with competitions and the lure of prizes!!
- There will be more people entering! - OK this may sound like a bad thing, after all doesn’t more people entering mean it becomes harder to win? Well perhaps. But in reality everyone is going to feel a financial squeeze over the coming year or so, and many are feeling it already. SO what better way to give yourself a bit of hope then to start entering competitions.
Seasoned compers have some advantage when it comes to increased numbers of entrants. They tend to be more organised, realise the importance in keeping proof of purchase and know how to keep an eye out for competitions offering greater odds of winning. But overall people just entering the hobby have the chance to change their lives in the true sense by winning products and holidays that they may not otherwise be able to afford.
The benefit of having more people entering competitions is of course that companies and promoters see greater results for their effort meaning that they will continue to offer competitions and sweepstakes in order to boost sales and profits and we won’t be left scratching our heads trying to find a new hobby.
So REALLY, it is a win win for all and I am resting peacefully in the prediction that comping will stay as a positive and luctrative hobby for those who choose to get addicted to it in 2009
GOOD LUCK ![]()

Competitions, Prizes & New Year’s Resolutions
Well, I’m a few days late to be writing about New Year’s Resolutions, but now is as good time as any hey!!!
There are a few New Year’s Resolutions for Prizetastic and a Few REALLY handy resolutions that anyone who wants to win prizes and create a real hobby out of winning should focus on in 2009, so here goes -
Prizetastic Resolutions -
- 3 blog posts per week including at least one post of competitions to enter and one post being hints and tips to winning more
- Run a new competition each month including a variety of prizes and entry methods
- Increase involvement with fellow bloggers in helping highlight their blog contests
- Grow Prizetastic readership & ability to grow it’s offering to everyone.
Must do Resolutions for Anyone who Wants TO WIN PRIZES
- Enter at least one competition a day (There will be at LEAST 7 competitions posted on prizetastic each week so if you only enter those you’ll be sticking to that resolution…. EASY)
- Read terms and conditions thoroughly - It’s a horrible feeling to win and not be awarded the prize due to not being eligible so save the heartbreak and read t&c before entering
- Get Creative - Prizetastic will be bringing you more tips on how to increase your chances or think outside the box to win creative style competitions and sweepstakes, so take the time and just give creative competitions a go….. who know’s you might just win
- Track entries & Winnings - This isn’t “vital” but it can be handy to keep an eye on what you have and haven’t entered, and especially for 25 word or less answers to note down the competition they were for and the answer. If you strike a winner it’s great to be able to modify it a little and use it again… the same with answers that don’t win, you just never know what judges are looking for!!!
So there you go, it’s a neat little list to focus on for the new year…. I’m actually very excited about this year and what it has to offer… there’s lots happening in our house so it’s looking to be exciting all around..
Good Luck and here’s wishing you a lucky, winning year xxx
